Cecile Broché, violin
Jan Rzewski, soprano saxophone
Jan and Cécile have been a duo for some time now. Both love to experiment with their instruments, both in composition and free improvisation. Musically they travel from higher, almost immaterial spheres to more earthly, complex landscapes. The writing itself dictates the rules, playing and discovering are the common thread. A playful, spicy and daring bath of sounds!
Cécile Broché was born with a violin in her hands, and has never let go of it… In recent years (that is, before viruses appeared), she divided her time between Europe and New York, collaborating (on stage and in recording studios) with Barre Philips, Garrett List, Daniel Carter, Diederick Wissels, Chris Joris, Jacques Siron,… As a composer she writes for theater and dance, in her creations she likes to combine music with everyday sounds. Kartinka, her latest CD with Jacques Pirotton and Antoine Cirri, was enthusiastically received by critics (4****/4 in Mad)
After his studies at the Scuola Popolare di Musica di Testaccio (Rome) and at the conservatories of Perugia (Italy) & Liège (Belgium), Jan moved to Brussels, where he has lived since 1991. He played for several years with the “Back to Normal Big Band” and the “Koba” quartet. As a composer, Jan has collaborated with the ICTUS Ensemble and the Orchester de Flandre, as part of a tribute to Frank Zappa. In 2007 he played in duet with pianist-composer Fabian Fiorini at the Liège Jazz Festival. This collaboration continues with a tour (January 2008) as part of the Jazzlab Series and the release of a CD, “Music for Food”. He has collaborated with Garrett List and Bud Blumenthal, Kaat de Windt, Misha Mengelberg, Sonic Youth, Ensemble Ictus, Arno, Elettronica Viva: Anthony Braxton, Alvin Curran, Steve Lacy, Richard Teitelbaum, Frederic Rzewski, Abdo Dagher,…
