SOMABANTI BASU – SAROD
SUMAN SARKAR – TABLA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concerts follow one another and are never the same, the next one will truly be an event. We will have the chance to welcome two exceptional musicians from Calcutta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somabanti Basu is one of the few sarod players of her generation to explore the intricacies of this Persian-origin instrument. She grew up in a family devoted to music. Somabanti has enchanted connoisseurs in musical circles in India and abroad. As a young artist, she has participated in several prestigious music competitions and was elected best performer at All India Radio among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suman Sarkar is an accomplished tabla player from Calcutta. He has accompanied many renowned musicians such as Lakshmi Shankar among others. He has also performed with renowned European jazz musicians and groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both have toured extensively in major cities in Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, and Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian classical music is based on Ragas (“colors”) which are scales and melodies that form the basis of the performance. The goal of the Raga is to create a state of trance to create an atmosphere of ecstasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian music is monodic and not polyphonic. The sarod is a popular string instrument in Hindu music. It has four main strings, six rhythm and drone strings, and fifteen metal strings. It is played by striking with a plectrum made from sandalwood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tabla consists of two drums (the right drum being called “daayan” and the left drum “baayan”). It is undoubtedly the most important percussion accompaniment in Indian classical music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
